HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO SHOW THE PRODUCT?

  • in normal advertising you always want to show the product, and it tends to be prominently placed
  • but in social selling you don’t have to show the product in a dominant way
  • showing the product(s) too much could potentially erode trust
  • sprout social posted the top reasons for unfollowing: too many promotional messages.
  • balance will be the key
  • it’s like seeing the “wires” and control panels on a Disney ride. if you pull back the curtain too much the audience will see through the magic
  • if you show the product too often then your audience could start saying “wait a minute…. this isn’t a ‘regular’ person like me… this whole feed is all about selling me stuff!
  • think about having an amazing cheeseburger… if you had an incredible cheeseburger and you are just overflowing with excitement that you had to share the experience on social media, do you HAVE to show the burger?
  • this entire concept can be tricky depending on the brand, and the products… and how you feature them. for instance, if you are promoting jeans a feed of folded, stacked piles of jeans all the time will feel too promotional… but a feed of people (models even) who are doing life while wearing the jeans will be a lot more forgiving
  • if the product is more like a health and beauty aid seeing the product in a jar or box will not go very far…
